Subject and Issues

We follow a group of scientists during an expedition on Victoria Island, a desert of rock and ice, where lives a community of Inuit (Ulukhaktok) which is still very much unaffected by the 'civilized world'. The mandate of the geological team is to map the region, but also to ensure a Canadian presence in a region whose sovereingty is contested ( North West Passage )

During summer, the remoteness of the expedition and the day-to-day adventures undoubtedly affect behaviors and lead to psychological changes in the members of the group, which consists mostly of students looking to complete their PhD in geology.
The interactions between the science team and the native community are closely knit. The few Inuit living on camp during summer allow for strong bonds to be created and to bridge the cultural differences, making room for friendships and for the expedition to thrive.

Presently, the Inuit are themselves dependent on the success of the expedition; even more so since the impacts of the climate change have taken drastic proportions.
The Inuvialuit of the Great North are a non-violent, peace-loving community who still possess the very efficient technological know-how of their ancestors.

The annual trip made by the geological commission is an opportunity to capture those last images of an ancient culture that is fading. This window into our prehistoric past will allow us to observe one of the last ancient societies that remain untainted by modern influences. The film is an incredible opportunity to better understand Inuvialuit culture and bring back awe-inspiring images and stories that will allow us to understand the impact of the opening of the north.

How will the new generation of Inuvialuit cope with this new reality? What will the social impacts be in their community? What steps are being taken by the guests in native lands?

The expeditions that have been made by the geological commission in the last few years have allowed for the two worlds to connect. Bonds have solidified between the two cultures. The film hopes to benefit from the generosity of both groups in order to display the importance of this great human endeavor.
